What Control4 does in a villa

A large Dubai villa can have lighting in every room, several air-conditioning zones, motorised curtains, a majlis, a cinema room and cameras around the plot. Without a plan, each one gets its own remote or app. Control4 puts them behind one interface that looks the same on every device.

The most useful feature is scenes. One press can set the house for arriving home, movie night or goodnight: lights, shading, music and the screen all change together. You can also schedule things by time of day, for example shading that closes in the hottest part of the afternoon.

Why we often recommend it

For most luxury villas we find Control4 a good balance of capability, reliability and value, and the app is easy for the whole household and for staff to learn. It works with a wide range of lighting, audio, video, shading and security products, so the system can be designed around the property rather than around one manufacturer.

It also scales. A home can start with lighting and audio and add shading, cinema or outdoor entertainment later.

Air conditioning, lighting and shading

Cooling matters in Dubai. Control4 can work with compatible thermostats, lighting and shading so rooms are cooled when someone is using them and sun is kept out when it is not. How much this saves depends on the home and how you live, so we do not promise a figure.

What can be controlled depends on the air-conditioning system installed in the villa, so we check it at the survey before we promise anything. On most installations Lutron handles lighting and shading, tied into the Control4 system. Cinema and audio

Control4 suits cinema rooms because one control point can dim lights, close curtains, start the projector and select the source. A current example is the dedicated cinema at Villa 86 in Dubai Hills, which uses Control4 with lighting and climate control (see Villa 86).

Get the network right first

How a project runs

Every project starts with a consultation and site assessment to understand the property and how you live in it. We then design the system, agree the specification, install it cleanly, programme and commission it, and finish with training, documentation and support. We work alongside your architect, interior designer and contractor, so cabling and equipment are planned early and kept out of sight.

Control4 and other platforms

The best results come when the control system is specified with the architect and interior designer, before cabling is finalised. Is Control4 better than Crestron or KNX?

None is best for every project. Control4 suits many villas well, Crestron can suit very large or highly bespoke projects, and KNX is another route. We install all three and explain the trade-offs.

Is Control4 suitable for an apartment?

Yes. An apartment or penthouse can use the same system on a smaller scale, for example lighting, audio and shading from one app. We scale the design to the space and the building's fit-out rules.
