Smart home not working properly? Here's what to do — and how to avoid it happening again

Smart home technology is extraordinary when it works. And frustrating when it doesn't.

If you live in Dubai and your smart home system — whether it's your lighting, your AV, your blinds or your Control4 app — isn't behaving the way it should, you're not alone. We receive calls and messages every week from villa owners across the UAE whose systems were installed by companies that are no longer around, or who simply can't get hold of whoever installed it.

Common smart home problems in Dubai villas

The most frequent issues we encounter when taking over maintenance of existing systems include outdated software that hasn't been updated since installation, devices that have dropped off the network due to WiFi infrastructure issues, programming errors that were never resolved at commissioning, and equipment that has failed and never been replaced.

In many cases the fix is straightforward. In some cases the system needs more significant work. Either way, the starting point is understanding exactly what you have and what's causing the problem.

What to do if your smart home isn't working

First, try a full system restart — power down the main rack or control processor, wait 60 seconds, and power back up. This resolves a surprising number of issues.

If that doesn't help, check your internet connection and WiFi. Many smart home problems are actually network problems — if your router has dropped or your WiFi is patchy, devices lose connection and the system appears to malfunction.

If neither of those helps, you need a professional to look at it. Don't let a non-working system sit for months — issues compound over time and what starts as a minor fix can become a major one.
