A big Dubai villa is hard on Wi-Fi: thick block walls, several floors, long distances and a lot of devices. Most internet providers' routers cannot cover it well. This guide explains how a professional villa network is planned and how the brands we use compare, so you can ask the right questions of any installer.
We install Wi-Fi as part of smart home projects at WAV Smart AV Dubai. Our preferred brands are Ruckus and Rivi, and we also supply, install and support Ubiquiti.
Why the router from your provider is not enough
A single router in one corner has to push a signal through concrete and block walls. The result is the familiar pattern: strong signal near the router, weak or no signal in the far bedroom, the majlis, the garden or the staff quarters. Moving the router rarely fixes it, because the problem is the number and position of transmitters.
Wired access points, not repeaters
The reliable answer is several access points, each connected to a network switch by cable, and positioned throughout the home. Cable-connected access points do not lose half their speed relaying each other, which is what range extenders and some mesh systems do. In a villa, we prefer cable wherever we can.
Cabling is easiest at first fix. If a villa is already finished, we survey for existing routes and use the best approach available. Older villas often need extra network and low-voltage cabling, which we check on the survey.
How many access points?
There is no single number. As a starting point, many villas need at least one access point on each floor, plus extra for large floors, thick walls and outdoor areas such as the pool, terrace and garden office. A survey, with a coverage plan for the actual building, gives the answer.
Ruckus, Rivi and Ubiquiti
All three can give very good results when the network is designed and installed well. Here is how we think about them:
- Ruckus: enterprise-grade access points, and one of our two preferred brands.
- Rivi: enterprise-grade networking now available for premium homes, and our other preferred brand.
- Ubiquiti: very common in Dubai homes. We supply, install and support it, including upgrading or extending a system that is already in place.
The brand is only part of the answer. Design, cabling, switches and configuration matter more. A well-designed Ubiquiti network will beat a poorly installed network of any brand, so ask who designed the layout and who will support it afterwards. We make no claim that one brand suits every villa, and we recommend the one that fits the house, the budget and how you use it.
What a professional network includes
- Access points placed from a survey, not guesswork.
- Managed network switches and good cable, so each access point has a wired connection.
- Separate networks for family, guests and smart home devices.
- Traffic priority for streaming, video calls or gaming.
- Remote monitoring so problems are spotted early.
Our Wi-Fi and networking page describes how we design this, and our post on why your smart home needs a proper network explains why it matters for lighting, audio and cameras.
Pools, gardens and outbuildings
Outdoor areas need their own planning. Pool decks, gardens, garden offices and detached staff or guest rooms rarely get a signal from indoor access points. We plan outdoor-rated access points where needed and connect them back by cable. The same planning covers outdoor speakers and screens, so the network and the AV are designed together.
Heat, equipment and support
Network equipment lives in a rack or cupboard, and Dubai heat is hard on it. We plan ventilation and cooling, as covered in AV rack building. If you have a network that has become unreliable, our maintenance and support page explains how we assess and look after existing systems.
Frequently asked questions
Is mesh Wi-Fi enough for a villa?
For a small home it may be. For a large, multi-floor villa with thick walls, cable-connected access points are usually more reliable. We confirm at the survey.
Which is best: Ruckus, Rivi or Ubiquiti?
None is best for every villa. Ruckus and Rivi are our preferred brands, and we also supply, install and support Ubiquiti. The design and installation matter more than the logo.
Can you extend or upgrade my existing Ubiquiti network?
Yes. We supply, install and support Ubiquiti, including upgrading or extending a system already in place. We check what you have at the survey first.
How do I know the coverage will be good?
A proper survey, a coverage plan and testing after installation. Be wary of any installer who quotes without seeing the building.
Can I keep my provider's router?
Often it stays as the internet connection, with the professional network behind it. We set this up during the design.
Do I need new cabling?
Usually, for the best result. New builds are easiest. Existing villas may use existing routes or need new cable, which we check on the survey.
